Teil von Greece
Reach the Dodecanese, Greece’s island group in the southeastern Aegean, by ferry and let the sea journey become part of your holiday. Choose Rhodes for medieval streets and seaside days, Kos for beaches and ancient sites, or Kalymnos for a climbing-focused escape. Travelling from mainland Greece means a substantial sea journey, while the group’s wide spread makes a cluster of neighbouring islands a more practical starting point for island-hopping than trying to explore it all. Explore the individual island and crossing pages to choose your route and book your ferry tickets.

Ferry Travel to the Dodecanese
Piraeus, the port serving Athens, is the main mainland gateway for ferry travel to the Dodecanese, Greece’s island group in the south-eastern Aegean. These islands lie far from the Greek mainland, so the sea journey deserves a substantial place in your itinerary rather than being treated as a quick transfer. Rhodes suits a trip combining a medieval old town with beaches and excursions, while Kos offers ancient sites and relatively flat terrain around its main town for cycling. Kalymnos draws climbers to its limestone cliffs, and Nisyros appeals to travellers who want to explore a volcanic landscape. For a holiday with a different focus, Patmos centres on its monastery and religious heritage, while Karpathos rewards time spent exploring mountain villages as well as the coast.
For island hopping, start with the geography: Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Leipsoi and Patmos form a useful north–south sequence in the northern part of the group, making them a logical area around which to shape a multi-island trip. Around Rhodes, Symi lies to the north-west and Halki to the west, offering a geographically focused alternative to ranging across the whole archipelago. Astypalea sits farther west, Karpathos and Kasos lie to the south-west, and Kastellorizo is far to the east, so combining these outlying islands calls for more travel time than their shared Dodecanese identity might suggest. Staying within one cluster leaves more of your holiday for exploring ashore, whereas covering distant islands brings greater variety at the cost of more time spent moving between bases. Once you have chosen your island combination, compare the available crossings before fixing accommodation dates, letting the ferry journey help shape a workable itinerary.
