Teil von Dodecanese, Greece
Travel by ferry to Astypalea, an island in Greece’s Dodecanese group, where whitewashed houses climb towards a hilltop castle above the Aegean. Chora, the main town on the island’s western half, places you close to the old harbour at Pera Gialos and the beach at Livadi. A narrow strip of land joins the island’s two wings, with Maltezana on the eastern side offering another coastal base to consider when planning your onward journey. Ferry Travel to Astypalea
Ferry travellers reach Astypalea, an island in Greece’s Dodecanese group, through its main ferry port at Agios Andreas, separate from the waterfront below Chora. Distinguish this arrival point from Pera Gialos, the old harbour at the foot of the island’s hilltop capital, when arranging your onward journey. For accommodation in Chora, Pera Gialos or nearby Livadi, arriving at Agios Andreas means continuing across to the southwestern part of the island. Maltezana lies on the northeastern side, beyond the narrow isthmus linking the island’s two broad halves, while Vathy is farther into that quieter eastern area. Your accommodation’s location therefore matters more than its distance from the sea: a waterfront address does not necessarily put you close to the ferry port.
Astypalea is the westernmost island of the Dodecanese, making it a geographical stepping stone between this island group and the Cyclades rather than a close neighbour of every other Dodecanese destination. Combining it with Kos or Kalymnos takes your journey eastwards, whereas Amorgos offers a geographical link towards the Cyclades; proximity on the map, however, does not establish a direct ferry connection. A stay centred on Astypalea gives you more time for its scattered settlements, while a multi-island itinerary adds variety at the cost of extra transfers and time spent travelling between bases. When choosing your ferries, compare the complete sequence of crossings and onward transfers before committing to accommodation on several islands.
