Ferry Travel to Giglio
Ferry travel to Giglio, an island in Italy’s Tuscan Archipelago, centres on Giglio Porto, the harbour village on its eastern coast opposite the Monte Argentario peninsula. This is the arrival point for the whole island: choosing between Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello and Campese is a decision about where to stay, rather than which ferry port to use. Staying in Giglio Porto keeps you close to the waterfront and avoids an onward transfer on arrival. Giglio Castello sits inland on higher ground, making it a distinct choice for time among the fortified village’s narrow streets, but reaching it requires a journey uphill from the harbour. Campese, on the western side, suits travellers who want to stay beside its broad sandy bay and are happy to cross the island after landing.
Giglio combines naturally with Monte Argentario and the Maremma area of southern Tuscany, allowing you to pair an island stay with time on the Italian mainland without shifting to another region. Keeping the mainland part of your trip around this stretch of coast limits the overland travel involved compared with adding northern Tuscany. Elba belongs to the same archipelago, but it lies farther north and has a separate mainland gateway around Piombino, so visiting both islands is better approached as a multi-stage journey than a simple island hop. For a shorter holiday, choosing Giglio plus the nearby mainland leaves more time at each stop; a wider Tuscan Archipelago itinerary needs room for the transfers between them.
