Teil von Italy
Reaching Italy’s Tuscan Archipelago by ferry brings you to a group of islands where wooded hills and rocky shores rise from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Elba suits a varied holiday of beaches and village visits, Giglio invites you to explore granite coves, and rugged Capraia appeals to walkers. The Tuscan coast is the mainland gateway, but the islands are spread out, so choosing one as your base is more straightforward than treating them as an island-hopping circuit. Choose your island, explore its ferry crossings and book the journey that fits your trip.

Ferry Travel to the Tuscan Archipelago
Reach Italy’s Tuscan Archipelago from the Tuscan mainland, choosing your coastal departure point around the island you want to visit rather than treating the group as a single destination. Piombino is the natural mainland gateway for Elba, Porto Santo Stefano for Giglio, and Livorno for Capraia. Elba, the largest island in the group, suits a longer stay combining beaches, hill villages and walks, with enough variety to make it a destination in its own right. Giglio offers a more compact trip centred on its harbour, the fortified village of Giglio Castello and coastal scenery, while volcanic Capraia appeals to travellers drawn to walking and rugged terrain. Low-lying Pianosa contrasts sharply with these hillier islands and makes more sense as a focused excursion than as the main base for a varied island holiday.
For island hopping, the key is to understand that these islands are scattered along the coast, not arranged in a convenient chain. Capraia lies northwest of Elba, Pianosa lies southwest of Elba, and Giglio sits farther southeast, off the Monte Argentario peninsula. Elba and Pianosa therefore form a geographically coherent pairing, whereas adding Capraia or Giglio broadens the journey and gives more of your holiday over to transfers. Do not build an itinerary around an assumed direct ferry between neighbouring islands: a return to the mainland may be part of a multi-island journey, making one island base simpler for a shorter break. When choosing your crossings, weigh the appeal of a second island against the time you want to spend exploring your first.
