Ferry Travel to Dugi Otok

Zadar is the mainland gateway for ferry travel to Dugi Otok, an elongated island in Croatia’s Zadar archipelago. The most useful arrival area depends on where you intend to stay: Brbinj lies around the island’s middle, while Sali sits towards its south-eastern end. Brbinj is a practical starting point for the northern villages of Božava and Veli Rat, as well as Saharun beach. Sali makes a more convenient base for the south-east and Telašćica Nature Park, whose sheltered bay occupies the island’s southern end. Because the island stretches roughly 45 kilometres from end to end, choosing an arrival close to your accommodation can reduce onward travel considerably.

Dugi Otok fits naturally into a wider northern Dalmatian journey, pairing time in Zadar with a stay on one of the archipelago’s outer islands. Ugljan and Pašman lie closer to the mainland, but their proximity on a map does not mean that combining them with Dugi Otok makes a straightforward sequence of ferry journeys; returning through the Zadar area may be the more practical approach. The Kornati islands lie to the south-east and make geographical sense as a separate excursion, rather than somewhere to assume you can continue by regular ferry. For a shorter holiday, choosing one base on Dugi Otok leaves more time for its villages, beaches and protected landscapes, while a longer itinerary gives you room for the mainland transfers that a multi-island trip may involve.
