Ferry to Tallinn

Teil von Estonia

Travel by ferry to Tallinn, Estonia’s capital on the mainland’s northern coast, and approach a waterfront framed by the medieval Old Town’s towers. The Old City Harbour lies close to the historic centre, making the Old Town’s cobbled streets and squares a natural starting point for exploring. West of the harbour, Kalamaja offers wooden houses and a lively waterfront, while Kadriorg, to the east, draws visitors with its leafy park and palace. Ferry Travel to Tallinn

Arriving in Tallinn by ferry brings you to Estonia’s northern mainland coast on the Gulf of Finland, not to an island or archipelago. For a stay centred on the medieval Old Town, an arrival close to the city centre makes the most practical starting point, keeping your onward journey short. If you are staying in Kadriorg or Pirita, east of the centre, weigh the arrival location against the onward transfer rather than judging it only by proximity to the Old Town. Kadriorg suits visits built around its park and art museums, while Pirita places you beside the coast and the mouth of the Pirita River.

The capital also makes a useful starting point for a wider journey through Estonia, but mainland stops and island visits involve different travel commitments. Lahemaa National Park lies east of the city, making it a geographically logical addition for time among coastal villages, forests and historic manor estates. Pärnu lies south on the mainland, whereas Tartu takes you southeast into the country’s university city; either extends your journey in a different direction from Lahemaa. Saaremaa and Hiiumaa lie off western Estonia, so combining either island with Tallinn means allowing for travel across the mainland as well as a separate sea crossing. For a shorter holiday, choosing one onward region leaves more time there; a broader mainland-and-island itinerary needs more room for transfers between stops.
