By ferry to Sicily – relaxed travel across the Mediterranean
A trip to Sicily is more than just a vacation – it is an immersion in Mediterranean culture, history and impressive nature. Anyone traveling to Sicily by ferry already experiences the journey as part of the adventure. Whether by car, motorhome or motorcycle – the crossing of the Mediterranean is comfortable, uncomplicated and offers maximum flexibility.
From Italy to Sicily – numerous ferry connections to the island
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is connected to the Italian mainland via many routes. There are classic ferry connections from Genoa, Livorno, Salerno, Naples, Reggio Calabria and Villa San Giovanni, among others. The Genoa – Palermo route is particularly popular and is operated by shipping companies such as Grimaldi Lines, GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci) and Tirrenia.
Shorter routes such as the 30-minute connection between Villa San Giovanni and Messina are also ideal for travelers looking for a quick crossing. Depending on the time of year and timetable, there are a wide range of ferry connections and ports to choose from to suit every travel time and itinerary.
Zurich – Palermo: ferry or transit?
Time and comfort comparison: Zurich – Palermo
Route | Distance/duration | Advantages | Disadvantages |
Only by car | approx. 1,800 km / min. 20-22 hours driving time | Flexible stopovers, no ferry booking necessary | Long journey time, high toll and fuel costs, tiring |
Car + ferry (e.g. Genoa – TMI) | approx. 500 km to Genoa / 20-23 hours ferry | relaxed journey, sleep in cabin, on-board comfort | longer total duration, ferry must be booked |
Anyone traveling from Zurich to Palermo is often faced with the decision: drive all the way by car – or take the ferry for part of the journey? The pure car journey on the highway takes you through Italy, past Milan, Rome and Naples to the ferry at Villa San Giovanni. That means around 1,800 kilometers, at least 20 hours of pure driving time, plus breaks, overnight stay(s) and traffic jams.
The alternative route: Zurich – Genoa by car (approx. 5 to 6 hours), then continue by ferry to Termini Imerese near Palermo. The crossing takes around 20 to 23 hours, depending on the connection – with your own cabin, restaurant on board and the opportunity to relax while the ship glides across the Mediterranean.
Especially for families or motorhome travelers, the ferry connection offers a more relaxed travel option: less stress, no long freeway stages, and Sicily can be experienced en route.
With your own vehicle to the island
For round trips, family vacations or individual tours – the option of taking your own vehicle on the ferry makes a trip to Sicily particularly attractive. Cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and caravans can be taken on board without any problems. For travelers with pets or special needs, many ferry companies offer suitable cabins, deck passages or special offers.
Campers in particular benefit from the camping on board* concept, which is available on some ships – such as GNV or Grimaldi Lines. This means that your vacation begins with a night at sea while you sit comfortably on deck or relax in your own cabin.

Comfort and safety on board
Modern ferries are now floating hotels. Depending on the provider and ship, passengers can expect comfortable cabins, spacious lounge areas, restaurants with regional cuisine, stores, play areas for children and sometimes even fitness rooms or small wellness areas. Safety on board is a top priority for all ferry operators – from the equipment of the ships to the trained crew.
