Keel
Kiel, the maritime state capital on the Baltic Sea coast, is one of the 30 largest cities in Germany with just under 250,000 inhabitants. It may not be the most exciting city, but it still has a lot to offer. One of the city’s landmarks is the Kiel Town Hall Tower, which was modeled on the St. Mark’s Tower in Venice. From the almost 70-metre-high visitor platform, you have a fantastic view over Kiel’s old town and the fjord. This approximately seventeen-kilometre-long arm of the sea, which was formed by glacial movements, characterizes the city. Ships, ferries, sailing yachts, lighthouses and beautiful beaches can be discovered everywhere. Every year, millions of visitors flock to Kiel Week, the largest sailing event in the world. In 2022, the 140th anniversary will be celebrated with a big festival.
Sailing City, as Kiel is also known, also offers plenty of cultural attractions. Admire ship models and nautical equipment in the maritime museum, in the listed fish hall, ancient Otto engines, hissing steam engines or roaring submarine diesel engines in the machine museum or visit one of the events in the opera house.
Shopping fans can also enjoy the city’s coolest street, Holtenauer Strasse, with its many charming little stores, bars and cafés. Or you can visit the Ostseepark in Schwentinental-Raisdorf, the largest shopping area in Germany, a little further afield. If you are hungry in between, try one of the city’s specialties: Kiel sprats, a type of herring that is served smoked and has the peculiarity that it shines silver in the water, but then takes on a golden color when smoked. Or are you more of a dessert person? Then try a lilac berry soup with semolina dumplings, a fruit soup made from the juice of black elderberry.
Whether you only have a few hours or a few days, the city on the water will inspire you.

Gothenburg
Even the arrival by ferry in Gothenburg is spectacular and your vacation in Sweden can begin! But a detour into the city is also definitely worthwhile.
Although it is easy to explore on foot, the white and blue streetcars are also a good alternative for getting to know the city.
Visit one of the various districts, for example the charming Haga with its many cafés and small stores, stroll along the Kungsportsavenyn promenade or browse through the boutiques and exclusive interior design stores in the trendy Magasinsgatan. A little further afield is Sweden’s largest amusement park, Liseberg. Get an adrenaline kick on the Aero Spin, for example, or be thrilled by a show at the Rondo, the best event venue in Gothenburg.
Back in the city, climb the 52-metre-high Sjömanstorn, from where you have a wonderful view of the city. See Gothenburg from a different perspective on a city tour with a Paddan boat as you sail under 20 bridges.
Sweden’s second largest city is considered a culinary mecca. Whether you choose to follow international trends at one of the food trucks or sample the innovative cuisine of the young generation of star chefs in one of the many Michelin-starred restaurants, the city offers something for every taste. Gothenburg is a well-known fish and seafood city. For lovers, a visit to the Feskekôrka fish market is a must. Whether you eat a Swedish delicacy there and then or take one home with you, the quality and freshness will win you over.
Enjoy this detour to the modern port metropolis and be inspired by the friendliness and hospitality.
