By ferry to Denmark – relaxed crossing of the Baltic Sea
Instead of driving for hours on the highway or spending time in crowded airports, your journey to Denmark starts on the water. A ferry crossing is more than just a connection between two countries – it is the first step towards a relaxing vacation. The view of the sea, the gentle rocking of the ship and the opportunity to enjoy refreshments on board make the ferry a particularly pleasant choice.
Directly to Copenhagen, to the coast of Jutland or to one of the Danish islands such as Fanø or Bornholm – with the numerous ferry connections, the vacation destination can be reached flexibly and conveniently.
Ferry connections from Germany to Denmark
There are several ferry connections from Germany to different regions in Denmark. These routes are particularly practical:
- Puttgarden – Rødby: Probably the most famous ferry route, also known as the Vogelfluglinie. A fast crossing of just 45 minutes connects the German town of Puttgarden with the Danish town of Rødby.
- Rostock – Gedser: A little longer, but more relaxed. The route from Rostock to Gedser takes around 2 hours and offers more time to lean back on board and let your gaze wander over the open water.
Both ferry connections are operated by Scandlines and offer numerous departure times that fit well into any journey.
By ferry to Sweden and Norway
Many travelers use the ferry from Germany not only for a detour to Denmark, but also as a gateway to the far north. Those wishing to travel on to Sweden or Norway will find connections with Stena Line or Fjord Line, which link the Scandinavian mainland with German ports.
The Hirtshals – Kristiansand route, which runs directly from Denmark to Norway, is particularly popular. The connection from Frederikshavn to Gothenburg is also a convenient way to reach the Swedish coast.
By ferry to Bornholm
Bornholm is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the country and is easily accessible from Germany by ferry. The Bornholmslinjen connects Sassnitz on Rügen with Rønne on Bornholm and takes travelers to the Danish Baltic Sea island in just a few hours. There you will find beautiful sandy beaches, rocky coasts and a relaxed culture that is perfect for a vacation home vacation.
Sights and destinations in Denmark
After the crossing, impressive landscapes and lively cities await:
- Copenhagen: The Danish capital combines historic buildings with modern city life. You can spend a whole day between Nyhavn, Amalienborg Palace and small cafés.
- Jutland’s coasts: wide sandy beaches, high dunes and the rough North Sea characterize the image of the Danish west coast.
- Aarhus & Odense: While Aarhus impresses with its art, architecture and maritime flair, Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, is reminiscent of old fairytale worlds.
- Roskilde & Skagen: The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde provides an insight into the seafaring past, while the North Sea and Baltic Sea meet in Skagen – a fascinating natural spectacle.
Tip for a day trip to Copenhagen
Taking the ferry from Germany to Denmark is a great way to plan a spontaneous detour to Copenhagen. It takes 1.5 hours to reach the city from Gedser, enough time to discover the highlights.
A good starting point is Nyhavn, where colorful gabled houses and cozy cafés invite you to linger. From there, head to Amalienborg Palace, where the changing of the guard takes place at 12 noon. If you fancy a spot of shopping, you should explore Strøget, one of the longest shopping streets in Europe. For a relaxing break, a traditional smørrebrød in one of the many pubs is worthwhile.
If you still have time, visit the historic Tivoli before heading back to Gedser and taking the ferry to Germany – a day well spent!
