Ferry to Pontine Islands

Teil von Italy

Scattered across the Tyrrhenian Sea off Italy, the Pontine Islands are a group of islands to reach by ferry, with Ponza and Ventotene offering distinct holiday experiences. Ponza suits a trip shaped by dramatic cliffs, coves and a colourful harbour, while smaller Ventotene invites a slower stay with village walks and Roman ruins. Ferries approach the group from Italy’s mainland coast; Ponza and Ventotene lie well apart, so island-hopping takes more planning than their shared archipelago name might suggest. Choose your island, then explore its ferry crossings to find and book a journey that fits your trip.

Ferry Travel to the Pontine Islands

The Pontine Islands lie off Italy’s Lazio coast in the Tyrrhenian Sea, with Ponza and Ventotene the principal destinations for ferry travellers arriving from the mainland. Choose your island first, then organise your mainland approach around the crossing rather than treating the archipelago as a single arrival point. Ponza, the largest island in the group, suits a stay centred on exploring different coastal areas, with its harbour settlement and the separate district of Le Forna offering distinct bases. Smaller Ventotene suits a more compact trip, with its village gathered around an ancient Roman harbour and archaeological remains adding interest beyond the waterfront. For a short break, choosing one of these islands leaves more time ashore and avoids making another sea transfer part of your stay.

Island hopping makes more geographical sense when you think of the archipelago as two clusters: Ponza, Palmarola, Zannone and Gavi in the west, and Ventotene and Santo Stefano farther east. Palmarola’s rocky coastline and uninhabited Zannone offer a different focus from the settlements of Ponza, while Santo Stefano is known for its historic former prison. These smaller islands are better considered excursion interests than interchangeable ferry arrival points or overnight bases. Combining Ponza and Ventotene brings together two distinct island experiences, but their separation makes this a more substantial itinerary than exploring around either island alone, especially when your mainland return is also part of the journey. Compare mainland crossings for your preferred base first, then build any second-island stay around the onward journey and return that suit your dates.
