Ferry Travel to Paxi
Travelling by ferry to Paxi, in Greece’s Ionian Islands, means heading for Paxos, the larger of the group’s two principal islands, where Gaios is the main arrival point. The main ferry harbour lies just north of Gaios town, making it a convenient gateway for a stay in the capital or the southern part of the island. If you are staying in Loggos on the east coast or Lakka in the north, allow for an onward journey from the harbour rather than treating arrival in Gaios as the end of your trip. Paxos is compact, but its winding roads mean that distance alone is not the best guide to how conveniently a port serves your accommodation.
For a wider journey, Corfu lies to the north, while Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland is a useful geographical reference point if you are approaching the Ionian coast by road. Combining Paxos with Corfu keeps your holiday within the northern Ionian Islands, whereas a mainland stay opens up a different itinerary through coastal Epirus. Antipaxos, immediately south of Paxos, is the closest neighbouring island, but reaching it involves a separate sea journey rather than an overland transfer. Lefkada, Ithaca and Kefalonia lie farther south in the Ionian chain, so adding them creates a more spread-out itinerary with more travel between stays. When choosing your ferry, weigh the arrival point and onward journey against where you want to spend your time, especially if you are combining several destinations.
