Ferry Travel to Gotland
Visby, on the west coast, is the main ferry gateway to Gotland, Sweden’s largest island in the Baltic Sea. Arriving here suits a stay in the medieval town, with its stone walls and historic streets, as well as journeys onwards across the island. For northern destinations such as Fårösund and neighbouring Fårö, allow for an overland journey from Visby rather than treating the port as your final destination. A base in the south, around Burgsvik or the Storsudret peninsula, means travelling in the opposite direction, so choose your accommodation with those onward distances in mind.
Gotland works well as a distinct island chapter in a wider Swedish holiday, but the sea crossing makes it less straightforward to combine with mainland stops than a continuous road or rail itinerary. If Stockholm or the east-coast province of Småland also features in your plans, choose your mainland departure point around the direction of your journey to avoid unnecessary backtracking. Fårö is a geographically close addition to a northern Gotland stay, whereas including it in a short visit based in Visby adds more travelling time. Öland offers another Baltic island stop within Sweden, but its bridge connection to the mainland makes it better considered as a separate stage of the trip rather than an assumed direct island-hopping connection. Compare ferry journeys alongside your mainland itinerary and your intended base on Gotland before booking.
