Teil von Germany
Discover ferry travel to Rügen, Germany’s largest island, where chalk cliffs and sandy bays line the Baltic coast. The port of Mukran, near Sassnitz on the eastern coast, is a useful gateway to the Jasmund peninsula and its beech forests. To the west lie the smaller island of Hiddensee and, across the narrow Strelasund, the mainland city of Stralsund—both worth considering for a wider coastal holiday. Explore ferry options for your dates and book a crossing that suits your journey.

Ferry Travel to Rügen
For a ferry journey to Rügen, Germany’s largest island in the Baltic Sea, distinguish the port of Sassnitz at Mukran on the island’s eastern coast from Stralsund on the mainland. Mukran is south of Sassnitz town, making it a useful arrival point for the Jasmund peninsula and its chalk cliffs, as well as the eastern seaside resorts around Binz. The northern Wittow peninsula, home to Cape Arkona, and the western side of the island require a longer onward journey, so the port is not equally convenient for every base. If your wider ferry journey brings you to another part of Germany’s Baltic coast, the road and rail links across the Strelasund provide an alternative approach via Stralsund. This southern gateway suits a stop in Putbus or a journey continuing through Bergen auf Rügen towards other parts of the island.
Rügen fits naturally into a wider journey through Germany’s Baltic coastal region, particularly when paired with Stralsund, whose historic centre makes a worthwhile mainland stop rather than simply a place to pass through. Nearby Hiddensee lies west of Rügen, but the two islands are not linked by a bridge, so combining them adds a separate sea crossing rather than a straightforward continuation by road. Usedom offers another island stay farther east, although reaching it overland means returning to the mainland rather than travelling directly along a chain of connected islands. For a shorter holiday, concentrating on Rügen and Stralsund reduces transfers; adding Hiddensee or Usedom makes more sense when you have time for another base.
